How to Install a Hose Clamp

Hose clamps are used to keep the ends of hoses tightened so that the contents inside don't leak out. These types of connections are commonly found in cars, trucks and other combustion engines. In a car, hose clamps are used to secure the power steering system, the radiator system and the fuel system, among others. Installing a hose clamp in an automotive engine should be done after the engine has had time to cool off to prevent burning yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • Hose clamps
  • Screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Crimping tool
  • Dishwasher soap
  • Clean off the hose you want to clamp with the degreaser and rag. This will help you see the hose better for making the connection and also help the clamp grip better.

  • Slip the clamp over the end of the hose. Slide it about halfway down the hose. Tighten it just enough to keep it in place.

  • Connect the hose to the nipple or hose coupling. Apply a few drops of dish soap to the inside of the hose to help slipping tight hoses into place.

  • Slide the clamp up so it covers both the end of the hose and the nipple.

  • Tighten the hose clamp in place with the screwdriver, pliers or crimping tool, as appropriate.
