How to Change the Wiper Blades on a Ford Escape

The Escape was Ford's first attempt at a sport utility cross-over vehicle and was introduced as a 2001 model. Developed jointly by Ford and Mazda, the Escape uses unitized steel construction, independent front and rear suspension and a four cylinder engine driving the front wheels. The Escape is available with all-wheel-drive and a V-6 engine at extra cost. The Escape has a total of three wiper blades; two at the front and one at the rear.

Things You'll Need

  • Replacement wiper blades

Front Wiper Blades

  • Pull the passenger side wiper arm away from the glass until it locks into the service position. Rotate the blade so that it is perpendicular to the arm.

  • Squeeze the two release tabs together on each side of the blade where the it attaches to the arm.

  • Pull the wiper blade away from the wiper arm and discard it.

  • Push a replacement wiper blade into position on the arm until it locks into place. Push the wiper arm back against the windshield.

  • Repeat the procedure for the driver's side windshield wiper.

Rear Wiper Blade

  • Grasp the wiper arm with one hand and pull it away from the glass. Continue to hold the arm away from the glass throughout the procedure, as there is no service position on the rear wiper arm.

  • Rotate the wiper blade with the other hand so that it is perpendicular to the wiper arm.

  • Grasp the blade assembly firmly near the joint where the blade and arm attach together. Push the blade from underneath to separate it from the arm.

  • Press the new wiper blade into position on the arm until it snaps into place.

  • Lower the wiper arm so that the blade rests against the glass.
