How to Replace Dashlights on a Toyota Tundra

Some of the reasons you may wish to change dashboard lights include dim or burned-out bulbs or the desire to change the instrument panel illumination color. Although many people prefer to leave this task to the professionals, some decide to save the money and perform the repair at home. Replacing instrument panel light bulbs on a Toyota Tundra requires the removal of the various dashboard components, but with some effort, you can complete the task without the assistance of a mechanic.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Use a wrench to disconnect the negative (-) cable from the battery terminal.

  • Remove the screws located on the lower-left finish panel and place them to the side. Take off the finish panel and then detach the hood release cable.

  • Remove the screws located just above the speedometer and place them to the side. Detach the instrument cluster bezel and remove it from the dashboard.

  • Remove the screws holding the center cluster bezel and place them to the side. Pull the cluster out of the dashboard and carefully unplug each electrical connection. You will need to remove the control knobs from each dial. Screws can be found at the top of each air vent, as well as in each of the dials.

  • Rotate the bulb holder of the bulb you want to replace counterclockwise and pull it out of the instrument panel. Pull the bad bulb from the holder and discard it in the trash. Push the new bulb into the holder and return the holder to the instrument panel. Do not touch the bulb -- just the base, since oils from your skin may cause damage.

  • Reverse the steps to reassemble the Tundra's dashboard components.
