Montana Windshield Wiper Mechanism Removal

The Montana is a three- or four-door minivan produced by Pontiac. As with all vehicles, it will require repairs over time. If the windshield wipers stop running smoothly or stop altogether, the motor may need to be replaced. Before installing a new motor, the old one must be removed. This is not a difficult task, but it does involve removing several parts before actually getting to the windshield wiper motor.

Things You'll Need

  • Pick
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Socket wrench set
  • Slip a flat head screwdriver between each wiper blade and its tip and pry off the protective rubber stopper on each tip.

  • Unscrew the nut that holds the wiper to the car with a socket wrench. This nut is located on the end of the wiper closest to the windshield. Pull the wiper arm away from the car. Do the same for the other wiper.

  • Pry off the plastic covers on the Phillips head screws at the base of the wiper mounts with a pick, sliding it under the surface of the covers and applying inward pressure.

  • Remove the Phillips head screws with a screwdriver. Do this for both wiper mounts.

  • Open the Montana's hood. Press the release tabs for the intake grating to release it. Remove the grating and set it aside.

  • Unplug the power cord that connects the wiper motor to its power source inside the Montana. This will be located next to the motor.

  • Remove the bolts that connect the wiper motor to the Montana's firewall with a socket wrench and attachment.

  • Pull the windshield wiper motor away from the firewall.
