How to Lower the Shocks on a Motorcycle

Lowering the shocks on your motorcycle may be for style or comfort. In some instances it may be necessary in order for you to be able to reach the ground comfortably. Whatever the reason, lowering your motorcycle by shortening the shocks is an easy process that almost anyone can perform with the right tools and instruction. Be careful, however, that you do not damage or shorten your shocks too much, as this will cause your bike to be not only uncomfortable but unsafe as well.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Remove the preloaded spacer on the top of the suspension spring with a wrench.

  • Put a spacer, or a very short spring, under the damper rod.

  • Remove the spring by turning the shock's threaded collar counterclockwise with a wrench.

  • Replace the spring with a lowering link, connecting the shock absorber to the swing arm. Tighten with a wrench.

  • Shorten the main fork springs. If your bike has cartridge forks, which is an internal rear suspension, you will need to slide the forks upward, into the triple trees, without hitting the fender.
