Mercury Sable Oil Change Specs

The Mercury Sable and its near-identical Ford Taurus twin were nearly inseparable from the day they debuted in 1986 through the Sable's first discontinuation in 2006. In 2009, a year after the Mercury revived the Sable on a new platform that it again shared with the Taurus, the large sedan featured a 3.5-liter V-6 with plenty of grunt for its class. When changing the oil in the 2009 Sable, the correct type and amount of oil, and the drain plug torque are key parts of keeping everything spinning under the hood.

Oil Specifications

  • After draining the oil, always tighten the drain plug to 20 foot-pounds, Mercury recommends using 5W-20 synthetic-blend engine oil in the 2009 Sable. The sedan's 3.5-liter engine requires 5.5 quarts of oil to refill it. When refilling the engine, make certain the oil level is at the top of the crosshatched area on the dipstick. The engine may require less than the 5.5-quart capacity to refill it, depending on how much oil remains in the oil pan after draining it. Check the level again after running the engine for a minute.
