How to Change a Taillight Bulb in a Thunderbird

Replacing the taillight bulbs in the latest Ford Thunderbird model takes about 10 minutes and requires only a a set of pliers. Taillight bulbs generally last 18 to 24 months but may failure earlier, depending on how frequently they are used. Replace faulty bulbs as soon as possible to avoid accidents stemming from other drivers being unable to determine when your vehicle is stopping. A replacement bulb should costs about $5 and is available at most automotive stores.

Things You'll Need

  • Pliers
  • Bulb number 3157K
  • Turn the Thunderbird's headlight control off and open the trunk. Find the plastic scuff plate on the inside edge of the trunk wall, behind the taillight bulb case.

  • Pull the scuff plate off, and then gently peel back the layer of carpet trim. This will expose the hardware that secures the taillight bulb case.

  • Take off the two nuts with your pliers. Place the nuts and their washers in your pocket or in a cup for safekeeping.

  • Push or pull the taillight bulb case out gently. Turn it over to find the bulbs. The taillight bulb is the top bulb.

  • Rotate the socket and pull it out of the case. Pull the bulb straight and way from the socket. Insert the new bulb. It is okay to touch the replacement bulb.

  • Push the socket with the new taillight bulb back in the Thunderbird's bulb case. Rotate it clockwise.

  • Insert the taillight bulb case into position. Attach the washers and nuts on the inside part of the trunk. Tighten the nuts with the pliers. Push the carpet back into position and push the scuff plate back into its place. Close the Thunderbird's trunk.
