How to Change the Brakes on a 2006 Honda Accord

The 2006 Honda Accord uses disc brakes on all four wheels and the brakes are changed in the same way. Behind the tire is a large round metal plate called the rotor and mounted to the top of the rotor is the brake caliper. The brake caliper pushes the brake pads against the rotor which stops the Accord while you are driving. You will need basic tools and about two hours to change all four sets of brake pads on this car.

Things You'll Need

  • Tire iron
  • Jack
  • Jack stand
  • 10-mm box wrench
  • Brake tool
  • Replacement pads
  • Loosen the lug nuts on the front left tire using the tire tool. Raise the front left side of the Honda Accord using the jack. Lower the frame onto a jack stand.

  • Remove the front left tire from the frame and set it aside. Loosen the two 10-mm bolts on the rear of the caliper using the wrench.

  • Pull the caliper off the rotor. Pull the two brake pads from the inside of the caliper. Place the push arm on the piston in the center of the caliper and the metal plate on the opposite side of the caliper. Turn the handle until the piston is forced into the caliper. Remove the tool.

  • Place the new brake pads into the caliper in the same position as the old ones. Place the caliper onto the top of the rotor's frame and tighten the bolts.

  • Replace the tire and wheel nuts. Lower the frame to the ground and repeat for the other three sets of brakes.
