How to Flush the Cooling System in a 1998 Camaro

Older vehicles like the 1998 Camaro are subject to internal rust and scale build-up. Performing a radiator flush and coolant replacement will help to maintain proper engine operation. A mixture of 50% water and 50% Prestone DEX-COOL is the recommended coolant. Depending on which engine your Camaro has, you will need 2 1/4 gallons of coolant mix for the 3.8-liter SFI OHV 6-cylinder engine and 4 gallons of mix for the 5.7-liter SFI 8-cylinder engine.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 gallons of antifreeze
  • Shop rag
  • Funnel
  • 5-gallon drain pan
  • Garden hose
  • Stiff bristle brush
  • Park the Camaro on a stable level surface.

  • Allow the engine to cool completely before proceeding.

  • Raise the hood, and inspect the radiator and radiator hoses. If there are any leaks or damage to the hoses, replace them. Check the front of the radiator for a build-up of dead insects or leaves. Remove the build-up with the garden hose and brush.

  • Remove the fill cap from the radiator.

  • Put the drain pan on the ground under the radiator. Center it beneath the drainage petcock.

  • Open the drain, and wait for the old coolant to stop flowing from the radiator.

  • Place the garden hose in the top of the radiator, and flush with fresh water. Continue flushing until there are no signs of rust or old antifreeze draining from the vehicle.

  • Close the drain, and fill the radiator with the fresh coolant mixture.

  • Put the cap back on the radiator fill hole.

  • Start the Camaro, and let it run for several minutes.

  • Shut off the engine, and allow it to cool. Check the coolant level, and add more coolant if needed.

  • Discard the used coolant in compliance with local laws.
