How to Check Lexus Engine Fluid and Oil

The Lexus is billed as a luxury car. But any car requires proper maintenance to run safely. Lexus recommends checking the oil level every month, ignoring this simple check can put the engine in danger. Engine oil gelling or sludge can slow the engine performance. Oil loss can starve the pistons of lubrication, causing permanent damage to the engine. Engine coolant should be checked every six months. Not only should fluid levels be checked, but also fluid quality.

Things You'll Need

  • Rag

Checking the Oil Level

  • Park the Lexus on a level space. Turn off the engine. Wait for ten minutes, to allow the oil to drain back into the oil pan.

  • Open the hood.

  • Find the oil dipstick. The dipstick is topped by a ring and fits into a tube. Depending on the Lexus model, the dipstick may be to the right or left of the engine block.

  • Place the rag next to the dipstick, and pull the ring out of the tube. Wipe the dipstick free of oil. Look at the end of the dipstick, while it is clean. A Lexus has two holes drilled in the end of the dipstick. Insert the dipstick in the tube.

  • Pull the dipstick a second time, and look at the oil level. If the oil has pooled in the hole furthest from the end, the car has sufficient oil. If the oil only reaches the hole closest to the end of the dipstick, oil should be added.

Checking the Engine Coolant Fluid

  • Park the Lexus on a level area. Turn off the engine. Allow the engine to completely cool.

  • Open the hood of the car. Depending on the Lexus model, the coolant reservoir will be either in the front right or front left corner of the engine area. The reservoir is clearly marked with two lines that say "Full" and "Low."

  • Check the level of fluid in the coolant reservoir. If it is between the two lines, the engine has adequate coolant. If the fluid level is at or below the "Low" line, add fresh fluid.
