Replacing window felt in an older vehicle is an unusual process, but it is not impossible or difficult. The easiest way to replace the felt is to purchase a window felt replacement kit. These kits include all parts necessary to replace the window felt. Some kits even come with self-sticking adhesive that prevents the need for screwing or drilling. Replacing the window felt in all of a car's windows should take about two hours.
Remove the inside door panel from the door by unscrewing the plastic or cloth facing and popping the cover off with a flat-head screwdriver or small pry bar. This should expose the interior of the car door so you can access the window felt.
Slip the handle removal tool between the handle and the spring clip. Pull the handle away from the door without breaking the spring clip. Set the handle aside.
Unscrew the window stop from the bottom of the door so you can access the window felt. Set the stop aside for now. It is helpful to mark the location of the window stop with a marker so you can install it in the correct place when finished.
Remove the staples holding the window felt in place, using large pliers.
Remove the old window felt from the door frame. Discard the felt. Note where the felt was placed so you can easily fit the new felt in place.
Fit the new felt or rubber inside the door frame. Make sure the felt fits over both sides of the glass so that the bond between the glass and felt is sealed when the window is rolled up. Screw the felt in place with the enclosed screws. Add the new staples to the felt strip to hold it in place inside the door frame.
Heat the felt with a hair dryer to remove any bumps or creases that occurred while the stripping sat in the factory packaging. This will help the felt fit against the window and create a better moisture barrier.
Replace the window stop and handle crank. Make sure the window can roll up and down properly before installing the door panels.
