How to Change an Inner Tube on a XR 50 Motorcycle

The Honda XR50 motorcycle is a dirt bike designed for off-road use by children. It has a 50cc air-cooled, single-cylinder, four-cycle engine and a three-speed transmission. The bike stands just 21.7-inches tall and has a 36-inch wheel base. Knobby. Off-road tires come as standard, but when most of the riding is done off public roads, the occasional puncture is inevitable. Changing an inner tube on a XR50 is a straightforward task that could save money at the repair shop.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Valve-stem remover
  • Tire levers
  • Soapy water
  • Place the motorcycle on a stand so the wheel is off the ground. Remove the wheel with a socket wrench. Fully deflate the tire and remove the valve stem by turning a valve stem remover counterclockwise in the valve.

  • Lay the wheel down and wet the tire wall with soapy water. Insert a lever between the tire and rim and pull the lever down toward you to get a part of the bead over the rim. Hold the lever in this position. Insert another lever a couple of inches away and pull more of the bead over in the same way. Remove the first lever and insert it farther away. Repeat until this side of the tire is completely off the rim.

  • Turn the wheel onto its edge with the valve at the top. Reach inside the tire and grab the valve of the inner tube where it protrudes through the wheel. At the same time, push the valve up on the other side with your finger. Pull the valve out of the hole and over the rim. Pull the inner tube out of the tire.

  • Push the valve of the new inner tube into the hole in the wheel. Push the new tube into the tire and onto the rim all the way around.

  • Lay the wheel down and wet the tire with soapy water. Slip an edge of the tire bead under the rim. Taking care not to pinch the inner tube between the rim and tire, push with your thumbs all the way around until the tire is back on the rim. Use the lever to get the last few inches over.

  • Replace the wheel onto the motorcycle and inflate the tire to the recommended pressure.
