If you have to change a tire or work on the underside of your 2001 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, you have to know how to jack up the vehicle. Doing it improperly can knock the truck off the jack and cause serious injury or even death.
Pull your Silverado onto a flat, level surface. If the vehicle will not start, have a few friends help you push to a spot where you can jack it up.
Put the Silverado in park, turn off the ignition and apply the emergency brake.
Remove the jack from your vehicle. If you have the regular cab model, the jack is directly in back of the passenger's seat. On extended or crew cab models, the jack is directly in back of the second row seat on the passenger's side. Loosen the wing nut on the wheel blocks and remove them from the compartment. Turn the knob on the bottle jack to lower the jack head and remove it from the compartment, along with the tool bag.
Attach the handle piece for the jack into the jack.
Place the wheel blocks directly behind the rear wheels to prevent the Silverado from rolling backwards when you jack it up.
Look under the vehicle near the front wheel that you'll be jacking up. Find the bracket on the frame where the jack head fits and place the jack directly under this bracket.
Raise the jack up until it is in contact with the underside of the Silverado. Continue raising the jack slowly until the wheel is completely off the ground.
Place the wheel blocks directly in front of the front wheels to prevent the Silverado from rolling forward when you jack it up.
Put the jack directly under the Silverado's rear axle. It should be between the bracket for the shock absorber and the spring anchor.
Raise the jack until it is in contact with the rear axle, then continue to slowly raise the jack until the rear wheel is off the ground.
