Occasionally you may want to remove the airbag from your vehicle because you want to replace it or do not want to use it. Whatever the reason, removing the airbag is a fairly simple procedure that can be completed in about a half-hour. The airbag is connected by electrical wires in the steering column and can be disconnected easily. You can remove the airbag yourself, saving time and money.
Unfasten the negative battery cable from the vehicle battery post with an open-end wrench. Let the vehicle sit for 30 minutes after unfastening the battery cable before removing the airbag.
Locate the vehicles fuse box. It is below the dashboard between the steering wheel and the driver's side door. Remove the fuse to the airbag with a fuse puller. You can identify the right fuse by looking at the fuse diagram on the fuse box lid.
Unfasten the screws holding the steering column access panel underneath the steering column. Locate the yellow plastic electrical wiring connector and unplug the connector by hand.
Locate the Torx screws in the back of the steering wheel. Use a Torx screwdriver to unfasten the screws. Lift the airbag in the center of the steering wheel up far enough to find the electrical connectors on the back of the bag.
Disconnect the plastic electrical wiring connectors on the back of the airbag by hand. Remove the airbag from the vehicle.
