How to Replace an Air Flow Sensor on a 2000 Toyota Avalon

Under the hood and attached to the engine of your 2000 Toyota Avalon lies a device responsible for measuring the amount of air that enters the combustion chamber. This device is known as the mass air flow (MAF) sensor. The MAF sensor sends data concerning the volume and quality of the air it receives from the air intake hose to the car's computer. The computer in turn regulates how much fuel to inject into the engine based on the reading it receives from the MAF sensor. This process improves engine performance and gas mileage.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Torque wrench
  • Disconnect the wiring harness that attaches to the MAF sensor, with a firm pulling motion.

  • Use a socket wrench to loosen the clamps that hold the air intake hose onto the MAF sensor.

  • Unplug the long thin rubber hose that runs from the air intake hose to the engine. Remove the air intake hose from the car and set it aside.

  • Remove the bolts holding the MAF sensor to the engine with a socket wench. Set the old MAF sensor aside.

  • Bolt the new MAF sensor to the engine using a torque wrench. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 7 Newton-meters. Replace the air intake hose as well as the long thin hose that plugs into the engine. Tighten the clamp that holds the air intake hose in place.

  • Plug the wiring harness into the MAF sensor.
