How to Remove the Starter on a Pontiac 3800

The Pontiac 3800 has the 3.8-liter V-6 engine that is used in most Pontiacs. The starter is located on the passenger side of the oil pan towards the bottom of the engine. The starter is mounted to the engine block by four bolts, and it is powered by two wires that are connected to it by a harness. Removing the starter is straightforward DIY project that requires only a few basic tools and not much of your time.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stand
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Ratchet
  • 12-mm socket
  • Raise the front passenger side of the Pontiac 3800 with a jack. Lower the vehicle onto a jack stand. Slide under the frame and locate the starter.

  • Remove the screw that secures the wire harness to the frame of the starter, using a flat-head screwdriver. Pull the wire harness off the starter.

  • Remove the four bolts from the corners of the starter, using the ratchet and socket. Pull the starter off the engine block.
