How to Reset the Service Engine Light on a Saturn S

The Saturn S has an on-board diagnostics (OBD) computer system that helps alert drivers to problems with the vehicle. Computer codes are stored in the OBD and can be read using an OBD scanner. You can purchase an OBD scanner at an auto parts store or take your Saturn to the store and ask them to read and clear the codes, but there is another, less high-tech way to reset the "Service Engine" light on your Saturn S.

Things You'll Need

  • 10 mm socket wrench
  • Pop the hood of the vehicle and locate the battery. Find the black battery cable and nut attached to the negative side of the battery, which is indicated by a large "-" symbol. Loosen the nut with the socket wrench and set it away from the car.

  • Turn on the Saturn's lights and radio to drain out the stored electricity.

  • Replace the negative black battery cable on the "-" symbol and firmly tighten the nut with the socket wrench. When you are finished, lower the hood of the Saturn. The "Service Engine" light should now be off, but you still need to take the vehicle to a mechanic to be fixed or else the light will continue to come on.
