How to Replace the Battery on a 2003 GMC Yukon

The 2003 GMC Yukon is equipped with a maintenance-free battery positioned beside the washer fluid reservoir in the front of the engine compartment. The maintenance-free battery should be replaced when it fails. Take the existing battery to an auto-parts retailer or purchase a replacement with the same identification number shown on the existing battery's label. Change the battery at home for a fraction of a service center's fee.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench set
  • Raise the hood of your Yukon. Remove the negative cable from the battery with a wrench. Lift the cap off the positive terminal and remove the cable with a wrench.

  • Remove the two bolts from the battery brace on the front of the battery mounting area with your wrench. Remove the brace. Loosen the bolts on the retaining strap over the battery with a wrench. Remove the strap.

  • Lift the battery out of the tray. Install the new battery in the same orientation in the battery tray. Replace the retaining strap and tighten the bolts on each end with a wrench. Install the front brace and secure the bolts with a wrench.

  • Replace the positive battery cable. Tighten the cable with a wrench and snap the cover back over the terminal. Replace the negative battery cable. Tighten the connection with a wrench. Close the hood.
