How to Lubricate Universal Joints

All driveshafts contain a series of joints known as universal joints. The universal joints connect the driveshaft to the transmission, rear end or another driveshaft, and allow limited movement up and down. This limited movement allows the driveshaft to be connected at various angles. Universal joints contain small needle bearings to allow for smooth movement, and require proper lubrication. Lubricate universal joints with grease during every oil change.

Things You'll Need

  • Grease gun
  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Jack up the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.

  • Inspect the driveshaft to locate the universal joints. These are located at every point that the driveshaft meets another component.

  • Examine the universal joint; look for a small fitting about 1/4 inch in length. This fitting is known as a zirk fitting.

  • Press the end of the grease gun hose over the zirk fitting. It should click into place. If not, clean the fitting and try again.

  • Pump the grease gun until you see a small amount of grease ooze from the joint. This process varies depending on the type of grease gun you have.

  • Remove the grease gun from the zirk fitting.

  • Repeat steps 4 through 6 for all remaining universal joints.
