How to Open Up a Car Headlight

While car repair can be intimidating for many, there are a few repairs that even a novice mechanic can handle. One job that anyone can do in a few steps with a screwdriver is removing the headlight assembly. Whether you're troubleshooting moisture in the housing, a loose wire or a dead bulb, the hardest part is getting into the headlight assembly area.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver set
  • Inspect the lens of the headlight you need to access. The lens may be held on by a couple of screws. If this is the case, simply loosen them with a screwdriver and gain access to the assembly from the front and continue to Step 3. If there are no screws, proceed to Step 2.

  • Pop the hood and look behind the headlight. You will see an access panel that may be held on with clips, tabs or screws. Remove this panel to gain access to the light assembly from the back.

  • Disconnect the power from the light assembly box before doing any work on it. Unplug the cord connecting the light box to the car's electrical system by depressing the tabs on the plug and pulling it out from its housing.
