How to Test the Transmission Fluid in a WRX

The transmission fluid in your Subaru WRX needs to be tested periodically to make sure there is sufficient fluid in the transmission. Since the WRX is all wheel drive vehicle, it may experience greater than normal wear and tear on the transmission compared to other vehicles, so neglecting the fluid level is asking for trouble. If the fluid level is chronically low, this may cause catastrophic transmission failure, requiring a complete rebuild or replacement of the transmission depending on the extent of the damage.

Things You'll Need

  • Shop rag
  • Park the WRX on a level surface and open its hood, with the engine off and cooled down. Locate the transmission dipstick to the left of the intercooler.

  • Pull the looped handle out of the transmission and wipe off the transmission fluid with a rag.

  • Reinsert the transmission dipstick into the filler neck, until it bottoms out, then remove it.

  • Check the fluid level on the end of the dipstick. The WRX has an "L" and an "F" mark on the end of the transmission dipstick. The fluid level should be between these two marks.
