How to Open the Hood on a 1992 Toyota Camry

If you own a 1992 Toyota Camry, you should keep up with the routine maintenance and care of the car. When you need to replace the battery, coolant or oil, you need to get under the hood. Without access to the engine compartment, you cannot properly maintain your Camry. You can open the hood of your Camry in seconds.

  • Locate the hood release latch under your Camry’s dashboard. The lever is located near the driver's door on the lower edge of the dashboard.

  • Grasp the release latch and pull it out toward the rear of the car until the Camry’s hood pops up slightly. Go to the front of the car and locate the release catch underneath the hood, near the center of the car.

  • Lift up on the release catch to open the hood the rest of the way. Raise the hood and lift the support bar to prop it open.

  • If the hood doesn't "pop" when you pull the release lever, the hood's internal catch may need to be "reset." Push the lever back in all the way, then go to the front of the car and place the palms of your hands on the hood, at the front in the center (over where the release catch is). Push down, with a sudden motion, as hard as you can. Then go try the lever again. If this doesn't work, then you probably have a broken release cable, and you will need the assistance of a mechanic.
