Home Remedies for Cleaning Ice Off of a Car

Ice buildup can wreak havoc on roads, highways, driveways and anything else it can rest on, including cars. Ice on cars can be a pain to say the least, and needs to be broken up to prevent engine freeze or worse. There are certain products that may be available right at home that can safely melt ice off automobiles

Rubbing alcohol

  • Rubbing alcohol is a good item to use to melt ice off of cars.Rubbing alcohol is cheap and can be bought in large amounts. It has a lower freezing temperature than water and is chemically warmer. Pouring rubbing alcohol on windows and doors will melt the ice within a few minutes. For thick ice chunks simply pour more alcohol, and use an ice scraper to remove the remaining ice. Use 91 percent isopropyl alcohol or higher because it is more concentrated and contains less water, which makes it "hotter" than diluted forms.

Salt

  • Using salt for melting ice has been used for areas that get plenty of snowfall, using it on roads and highways, driveways and anything covered with ice. Salt or sodium chloride, melts the hydrogen that keeps ice together, lowering the freezing point. Spreading salt evenly over icy areas will start to melt ice immediately. It is also sold in large quantities and is fairly cheap. Rock salt, table salt and sea salt will all help to melt ice quickly.

Hot water

  • Hot water will melt ice indefinitely. Water with high temperatures contains a lot of heat energy, increasing the temperature if the ice, which will melt upon contact. A bucket or large container full of hot water from the tap that has been heated in a pot or kettle can be thrown over a car to melt ice that is bound to windows, doors and windshield wipers quite fast. On windows coated with thick ice, hot water in large quantities can crack or break the glass. Pouring hot water little by little and using an ice scraper to chip and scrape off any loose ice will prevent breaking.
