How to Install a Brake Light Switch for a 2003 Chevrolet S10

Chevrolet equipped the S10 pickup trucks with a brake-light switch to control the functions of the brake lights and to disengage the cruise control. The switch opens when the brake pedal is in the full up or disengaged position. As foot pressure pushes the brake pedal down to engage the brakes, the switch closes and sends battery voltage to the rear brake lights. Normal wear and tear can cause the contacts in the switch to corrode or arc, leading to failure.

  • Open the driver's side door. Reach up under the driver's side of the dashboard with the new brake-light switch in hand.

  • Align the electrical connector for the brake-light switch with the slot in the switch. Push the connector firmly into the switch until it snaps into place.

  • Slide the brake's push rod and the brake-light switch onto the large pin on the side of the brake-pedal lever.

  • Align the slot in the push-rod retainer with the groove in the end of the brake-lever pin. Push the retainer down until it snaps firmly into place.
