How to Make a Shift Knob

Shift knobs come in all shapes and sizes. Whether your vehicle has a manual or automatic transmission, most factory shift knobs can be removed and a custom one can simply be screwed on in its place. Almost anything can be made into a shift knob, such as a baseball or billiards eight-ball, as long as the threading fits the factory shifter.

Things You'll Need

  • Vise
  • Drill
  • Thread tap
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Choose a solid item that you would like to make into a shift knob.

  • Secure the item in the vise.

  • Install the thread tap into the drill.

  • Unscrew the factory shift knob.

  • Measure the length of the thread on the shifter by starting the measuring tape where the thread begins and ends at the tip of the shifter. This will determine how deep you need to drill into the new custom shift knob.

  • Using a pencil, mark the depth you need to drill onto the thread tap.

  • Choose which side of the item you want to be the bottom and drill into that area. Drill up to the pencil mark you made on the thread tap

  • Test fit the custom shift knob onto your factory shifter.
