How to Change the Engine Oil Reset on a 2002 Chevy Monte Carlo SS

The 2002 Monte Carlo has what is called an Engine Oil Life System to tell you when it's time to change the engine oil and filter. This system tallies the engine revolutions and engine temperature to determine when to recommend that you get an oil change. These are more relevant parameters than mileage. The Monte Carlo signals "Change Engine Oil" when you should change the oil within two gasoline refills. You must reset the system after every oil change. You can reset it either using the radio or the accelerator pedal.

Using the Radio

  • Reset the Engine Oil Life Sytem by first turning the radio off. Then turn the ignition to "Acc" or "On."

  • Press and hold the "Tune Disp" button on the radio until "Settings" displays.

  • Scroll through the menu with the "Seek Pscan" button until "Oil Life" appears. Press "1 Prev" or "2 Next" to get to the submenu displaying "Reset."

  • Press "Tune Disp" to rest the oil life system. A chime will confirm that you did it correctly.

  • Exit the programming system by scrolling to "Exit" and pressing "Tune Disp." A chime will sound to confirm you exited the programming mode successfully.

Using the Accelerator

  • Turn the ignition to "On" with the engine off.

  • Press on the accelerator fully and release it three times in five seconds.

  • Repeat Steps 1 and 2 if you don't hear a chime. If you heard a chime after Step 2, you are done.
