Performing your own car maintenance is a great idea for anyone with time on their hands. Changing your own fuel filter is an easy maintenance job to complete in less than 20 minutes. Fuel filters clean your fuel and help keep your fuel injector from getting dirty and jamming up. Dodge recommends that you replace your fuel filter every 25,000 to 30,000 miles; however, this varies depending on your driving conditions.
Find your fuel filter. On a 1998 Dodge Durango, your fuel filter is located underneath your car beside your fuel tank. If you are unsure of how to find it, get underneath your car and locate your fuel tank. Trace your gas line until you get to a cylindrical silver container about 3 inches in diameter. This container holds your fuel filter.
Remove the fuel line from the fuel filter container using a wrench. As you are loosening the fuel line, some gas will spill out of the tube. That is normal. Once you have removed the fuel line, you will see the fuel filter.
Remove the screws holding the fuel filter in place using a wrench. As you are removing the screws, set them aside for later use.
Replace the old fuel filter with a new fuel filter. Secure the new filter in place with the screws that you previously set aside.
Reattach the gas line onto the fuel filter container using a wrench. Make sure that the fuel line is tightly fastened and properly aligned with the fuel filter container.
Clean up any spilled gas around the area. Turn on your engine and check underneath your car for any leaks. If you do not see any leaks, then you are finished.
