How to Troubleshoot Engine Noise in a Cadillac

Cadillac has been the premiere luxury brand for General Motors since GM bought the brand in 1909. Originally known for its large sedans that were popular among elderly consumers, Cadillac started expanding their brand to include SUVs like the Escalade, which became a large success for them. While Cadillac is known for craftsmanship, they can have mechanical problems just like any car. If your Cadillac suffers from engine noise, learn what to look for in order to find the cause.

Things You'll Need

  • Code scanner
  • Engine cleaner
  • Brush
  • Rag
  • Hook up a code scanner to your car computer to see if any engine codes come up revealing engine maintenance needs. There is a module under the dash on the driver's side of most cars that the scanner will plug into in order to access the computer. Some models may have it on the passenger side under the dash. If a knock sensor or another instrument is failing, the computer should be registering it. Replacing any bad sensors found could fix the problem.

  • Use an engine cleaner to remove any deposits in the engine. Cover the distributor cap in a plastic bag if your car has one to prevent it from getting wet. (Check your manual, but it's normally on the right side of the engine.) Turn on the engine and spray the engine down with engine cleaner. Let it sit for a minute and then rinse it off with a hose. Use as little water as possible. Any additional dirt or deposits can be removed with extra engine cleaner and a brush. Dry it as best you can with a thick rag. Be careful to not burn yourself as the engine gets hotter.

  • Look for any leaks or loose parts in the engine when the engine is cool. Engine noise can sometimes be caused by loose brackets or engine parts vibrating. Run the engine to see if you notice any excessive vibration anywhere while you watch the engine run.

  • Perform any standard maintenance that may have been neglected, such as oil changes and tuneups. Make sure all the engine fluids are topped off.
