How to Reset an Alarm System in a Chevy Cavalier

The alarm system on your Chevy Cavalier will run through your battery. As long as the alarm system has power, the alarm will work. Normally, this is not a problem because the battery on your Cavalier can stay charged for many days without ever running the engine. Of course, if you are driving your vehicle every day, your Cavalier's alarm will never shut down. However, if the alarm does go off accidentally, you'll need to know how to reset the alarm. To do this, you'll need to cut the power to the battery and allow the alarm to reset itself.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Socket set
  • Insert your car key into the Cavalier's driver-side door lock.

  • Turn the key to the lock position twice.

  • Turn the key to the unlock position on the lock twice. Your alarm should now be disabled.

  • Open the hood and loosen the retaining nut on the cable clamp running to the negative battery cable.

  • Lift up on the cable clamp to cut power to the battery.

  • Wait 1-2 minutes and then reconnect the clamp and tighten the battery cable clamp to the battery terminal. Your alarm is now reset.
