How to Change an Oil Filter on a 2000 Buick Park Avenue

You should replace the oil filter on your 2000 Buick Park Avenue at least every 7,500 miles. When you replace the oil filter, you need to drain the oil from the oil pan first, so it is a good time to do a full oil change. The Park Avenue requires 4.5 quarts of oil when completing a full oil and filter change. You can change the filter and oil at home easily, saving the cost and inconvenience of a service center.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Large drain pan
  • Wrench set
  • Oil filter wrench
  • 4.5 to 5 quarts of oil
  • Raise the hood of your Park Avenue and remove the oil fill cap. Your car's oil system will drain easier with the system open on both ends.

  • Raise the front of your car with a jack and secure it on a set of jack stands. Position a drain pan beneath the oil pan drain plug, about halfway back beneath the engine.

  • Remove the oil drain plug with a wrench. Wait for the oil pan to drain completely. Replace the drain plug and tighten it with a wrench.

  • Remove the oil filter next to the oil pan with an oil filter wrench. Turn the filter upside down in the drain pan to let it drain. Wipe the filter mounting area with a clean, dry rag to help the new filter seal.

  • Fill the new filter with clean oil, and put a thin layer of clean oil around the gasket on top of the filter. Install the filter and screw it into place until it is tight.

  • Raise the car slightly with a jack and remove the jack stands. Lower the car to the ground. Fill your Park Avenue with oil and check the level on the oil dipstick to confirm it is full.
