How to Replace the Power Steering Pump on a Saturn

If the power steering pump stops working on your Saturn, the best thing to do is replace the pump immediately. This process will take you less than an hour to complete. If the power steering pump is not covered by your warranty you can purchase a new power steering pump from the Saturn dealer and a warranty to cover future damages. The power steering pump is mounted on the firewall or on the engine, depending on your Saturn model.

Things You'll Need

  • Drain cup
  • Pliers
  • Ratchet set
  • New power steering pump
  • New power steering fluid.
  • Open the hood and locate the power steering pump. There will be a plastic container on the top with "Power Steering Fluid" stamped on the cap.

  • Place the drain cup under the power steering fluid container. Remove the hose at the bottom of the power steering fluid container using the pliers. Let the power steering fluid drain into the cup.

  • Loosen the bolts that are holding the power steering pump to the engine or firewall with the ratchet set. There are two or four bolts depending on the model.

  • Loosen the pulley that the belt is connected to using the ratchet set. Pull the belt off of the pulley. Remove the bolts that are holding the power steering pump to the engine completely. Pull the power steering pump out of the engine compartment.

  • Place the new power steering pump in the same spot and position that the old power steering pump was. Secure the new power steering pump to the engine or the firewall using the securing bolts and the ratchet set to tighten the bolts.

  • Replace the belt to the pulley and tighten the pulley using the ratchet set. Reconnect the power steering hose to the power steering pump. Fill the power steering fluid container according to the directions on the power steering fluid bottle.
