How to Install a Door Weatherstrip in a Mustang

Ford Motor Company introduced the Mustang in 1964 as a 1965 model and it has been popular ever since. The Mustang is a sporty car available in fastback and convertible body styles with six cylinder or V-8 power. Part of the Mustang’s appeal is the wide variety of options available, allowing you to create anything from a sporty economy car to an all out racer that can compete with much more expensive cars. To help keep your Mustang water and air tight, replacing your door weather strips just may the ticket.

Things You'll Need

  • Philips screw driver
  • Plastic scraper
  • Acetone
  • Clean rags
  • 220-grit sandpaper
  • Door weather strips
  • Weather strip adhesive
  • Open the door of your Mustang and remove the window gasket from the rear edge of the door by the door latch by backing out the holding screws with a Philips screwdriver. Set the screws and gasket aside for reuse.

  • Grasp the door weather strip and pull it completely off the door. Remove any glue residue from the door with a plastic scraper. Clean the scraped area with acetone and a clean rag. Lightly sand the area that will be covered by the new weather strip with 220-grit sandpaper to roughen up the mounting surface.

  • Install the new weather strip correctly by comparing it to the old weather strip still attached to the other door. Apply a 12-inch bead of weather strip adhesive to one end of the weather strip and press it into position on the door.

  • Continue to apply 12-inch beads of weather strip adhesive to the weather strip and press it into position on the door. Continue until you have reached the end of the weather strip.

  • Reattach the window gasket by driving the holding screws in with a Philips screwdriver in a clockwise direction.

  • Repeat the above procedures for the other door weather strip.
