How to Change a Chevy Starter

Replacing the starter in a Chevrolet does not have to be a complicated task. The starter is a motor that is used to start the flywheel when you start the vehicle. The flywheel in turns sets the crankshaft in motion and that is what makes your Chevrolet run. When the starter goes out, the car will not start, and it is time to put in a new one.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Socket set

Remove the Starter

  • Disconnect the battery.

  • Locate the starter sitting by the transmission. Access it by crawling underneath the vehicle.

  • Remove the positive cable off the starter by unscrewing the nut on the post. The cable will slide off.

  • Remove the bottom bolt with a socket wrench. In some applications the ground will be connected to the bottom bolt.

  • Pull the starter loose with your hands. The starter should slide out of the flywheel assembly.

Install the Starter

  • Place the new starter up in the flywheel assembly.

  • Start the upper and lower bolts. Do not tighten yet. Ensure the ground cable is installed through the bottom bolt.

  • Tighten the bolts snug. Ensure that both top and bottom are tight.

  • Connect the positive wire to the starter solenoid. Tighten the nut with a socket wrench. Do not over tighten or you will break the post.

  • Connect the battery.

  • Start the vehicle to ensure the starter is functioning correctly.
