How to Change a Ford Air Conditioning Compressor

Air conditioning compressors in Ford vehicles supply the air forced air that helps cool the cockpit of the vehicle down when the compressor is engaged. Over time the air conditioning compressor may wear out and need to replaced. Replacing a Ford air compressor is not that difficult and can be done by a home mechanic.

Things You'll Need

  • Box-end wrenches
  • Pliers
  • Breaker bar
  • Graduated cylinder
  • Screwdrivers
  • R-134a refrigerant
  • Air conditioning compressor
  • Safety goggles
  • Get the system evacuated of refrigerant by an automotive air-conditioning repair shop.

  • Use box end wrenches to disconnect the negative battery cable terminal from the battery.

  • Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the compressor with the pliers.

  • Remove the drive belt from the compressor pulley by removing tension from the pulley with a breaker bar.

  • Disconnect the refrigerant lines from the compressor with the box-end wrenches and remove the bolts from the compressor clutch mounting bracket. Lift the compressor out of the vehicle.

  • Pour the old refrigerant oil into the graduated container to determine the amount of new oil to add to the compressor.

  • Have the system recharged with the proper amount of R-134a refrigerant by the same certified mechanic that discharged the unit before you replaced the compressor.

  • Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes; this will let the system stabilize before running it under load.
