How to Decarbonize a 2 Stroke Scooter Exhaust

Carbon builds up on the inside of some of the exhaust components in a 2 stroke scooter. The actual exhaust (the muffler and tailpipe) may get especially dirty. This can usually be cleaned with carburetor cleaner, which is designed to remove carbon buildup on various engine and automotive components.

Things You'll Need

  • Carburetor cleaner
  • Rag
  • Wire brush
  • Spray the exhaust with carburetor cleaner, also called carb cleaner. Make sure that you spray the cleaner inside the tail pipe.

  • Use the wire brush to thoroughly clean the exhaust. This takes pure and simple elbow grease. The carb cleaner should cut through most of the carbon, but you will need to scrub the exhaust to remove stubborn deposits. Scrub the inside of the tail pipe really well, because this is likely where most of the carbon buildup will be.

  • Wipe down the exhaust and tail pipe with a rag. If you missed any spots, it will definitely show. You may need to repeat steps 1 and 2 until the exhaust is completely decarbonized.
