How to Wire Tail Lights

Wiring taillights to your car or truck is not as complicated as some may think. The place where you wire the taillights is behind a panel in the trunk, directly on the other side of where the actual taillights are. It is important to have taillights wired properly for safety and to adhere to vehicle regulations.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench New taillights Gloves, if desired Screwdriver

How to Wire Taillights

  • Make sure your vehicle is turned off and open your trunk. Remove any soft material covering the panels. Using the screwdriver, remove the panels at the back of your taillights. If you do not see any screws, find the edge of the panel and pull firmly with your fingers.

  • Insert the taillight into the hole on the back of your vehicle specific for taillights. Hold it firmly against the car, and put the bulbs and wires into the taillight housings.

  • Use the wrench and screwdriver to secure the housing with the necessary few nuts, bolts and screws. Then reattach the bulbs and wires to the housing by matching them in their correct slots.

  • Make sure the taillight is held securely, then turn on your car and test the taillights to ensure they are working properly.

  • Turn off the car once you have made sure the lights are wired and working, and reattach the panels to the backside of the taillights. Replace any soft material, and shut the trunk.
