A clean air filter can increase the life of an engine and improve gas mileage, because it makes it easier for the engine to get air. Replacing the air filter on a Chevy Impala is an easy task that can be completed in less than 10 minutes. Air filters should be changed every 30,000 miles for normal driving conditions and every 3,000 for conditions that are adverse.
Keep the vehicle off while working on the air filter. Don't start the Impala without the filter in place as the filter acts as a barrier for engine backfires.
Locate the filter at the front, driver's side corner under the hood. Look for a black box that has a slightly grated lid, and a large accordion type tube coming from it.
Release the clips that hold the lid on the air filter housing in place. Lift the tabs out of the housing unit, then push the lid towards the engine.
Remove the filter from the case and discard it. Replace the filter of a 2006-2008 Impala with a K&N air filter, part number 33-2334. Use a K&N filter, part number 33-2141-1 for 2000-2005 Impalas. Push the tabs of the filter through the slots in the housing unit.
Put the lid back on the air filter housing unit. Secure the lid in place by snapping the air filter housing clips back in place.
