What Kind of Antifreeze Does a Pontiac Grand Am Take?

Pontiac equipped the 2005 Grand Am -- the final year for the model -- with a 3.4-liter V-6 engine and a four-speed automatic transmission. To help keep the engine and transmission within their specified temperature ranges, you need to fill the cooling system with the correct type and amount of coolant.

Cooling System

  • The cooling system in the 2005 Grand Am holds 13.6 quarts of coolant. Use a 50-50 mixture of silicate-free Dex-Cool coolant and clean water. Keep in mind when working under the hood that the electric engine-cooling fan can start up and run even if the engine is not running. Stay clear of the fan when checking and adding coolant in your Grand Am.

Leak Detection Dye

  • Leak detection dye used prior to 2008 can make the Dex-Cool coolant appear green when viewed in a dark container, making you think it is conventional coolant. A new leak detection dye, part No. 89022219, does not alter the appearance of the coolant. If you suspect that conventional coolant has been added to your Grand Am, flush the cooling system and refill it with a 50-50 mixture of Dex-Cool coolant and clean water.
