How to Renew an Expired Vehicle License in Washington State

Part of your vehicle licensing fees in Washington state help the state to maintain and expand state highways. A license plate tab is proof you have paid your fee. But if you forget, it could be a costly mistake. The state will give you 12 months after the expiration to renew your state license tabs with no penalty, but law enforcement won't be as generous. If you are stopped by police in Washington for failing to renew your license tabs, expect a fine of at least $124. Avoid any complications by paying for new tabs online or at a state licensing department office.

Things You'll Need

  • License plate number
  • Vehicle identification number (VIN)
  • Driver's license number
  • Emissions test report, if required by your county
  • Go to the Washington State Department of Licensing website (dol.wa.gov) and click the "Renew Your Vehicle Tabs" section.

  • Disclose information about the vehicle and yourself when prompted. Provide your current address, driver's license number, vehicle license number and the last four digits of the vehicle identification number, or VIN, when prompted. Have your emissions testing report available, as well. Pay the fee online with a valid credit card.

  • Go to a Washington state licensing office to renew your vehicle's license if you prefer to pay in person. Take with you all the documents necessary to show proof of identification and proof of vehicle ownership. Also provide your emissions testing report should you need one.
