The Jeep Liberty is the vehicle that replaced the Jeep Cherokee in 2002. The Liberty was designed to be sportier and more aerodynamic than the Cherokee, and it became popular with younger drivers. As with all vehicles, you will have to perform routine maintenance to keep your Liberty operating properly. One common issue that needs to be addressed with the Jeep Liberty is a thumping or drumming noise coming from the vehicle.
Determine if the thumping is coming from a front or rear section of your Jeep Liberty. Also determine if the thumping occurs when you are driving at a certain speed or when you are turning. Once you determine the location of the sound and any specific driving circumstances under which it occurs, park the Liberty and remove the keys from the ignition.
Use a flashlight to examine the tire nearest the source of the thumping. The tire may be warped or otherwise damaged, which may cause it to vibrate at higher speeds and produce a thumping sound. If this is the case, the tire will need to be replaced.
Examine the axle, noting especially the spot where it is attached to the frame. If your Jeep's axle is damaged, it may create a thumping sound. If this is the case, you will need to take your vehicle to a qualified technician.
Examine the area behind the tires. This is especially important for the front tires. If a tie rod is damaged, the thumping noise will occur during turns. A damaged tie rod will need to be examined by a qualified technician. If a tie rod breaks, the car will be uncontrollable.
Examine the shocks and springs. If these are broken, the vehicle will bump even on smooth roads. You will also notice that the Jeep is sitting lower on one side than the other. If you have a damaged rear leaf spring, your Jeep will appear to be sitting back like a frog. Damaged leaf springs need to be replaced by a qualified technician.
