How to Flush Auto Air Conditioners

Flushing out an air conditioning system will remove contaminants, oil and any debris from the system. Once an auto air conditioning system is flushed, it will have a positive effect on the air conditioner and allow it to work up to its full potential. The unit is flushed out with mineral spirits or other solvents.

Things You'll Need

  • Mineral spirits
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Plastic bottle
  • Rubber tip blow gun
  • Air gun
  • Dry air
  • Nitrogen
  • Shop rag
  • Locate all of the parts on the air conditioner that are going to be flushed. Pop open the hood of the car and find the air compressor. The compressor is round shaped, with a hose running off of it and one threaded end. Find the two hoses connected to the compressor. These are the hoses that will be flushed.

  • Loosen both hoses connected to the air compressor using an adjustable wrench. Pour the solvent into a plastic bottle and attach a rubber tip blow gun to the plastic bottle. Blow the solvent into both of the hoses. Blow in dry air or nitrogen using an air gun at 125 PSI to move the solvent through the system.

  • Flush the system and continuing blowing in air until all the debris has been removed. Dry both hoses in both directions. Blow the solvent through the hoses and out an end. Catch it in a shop rag.

  • Hold the blow gun tight at one end of the rag and hold your finger over the other to build up pressure. Release your finger to let it blow off pressure. Repeat the process until there is no sign of solvent coming out and the system has been flushed out completely.
