How to Replace Window Regulator Tape in an Oldsmobile

Window regulator tape helps the window of a car to function properly by keeping the window regulator in place. The window regulator relays power from the motor to the window glass to allow the power window to go up and down. Replacing the window regulator tape can be a time consuming task. The door panel must first be removed to get at the regulator itself. However, changing out the tape for an Oldsmobile is no different than changing out the tape for any other type of vehicle.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Socket wrench
  • Pry bar
  • Regulator tape
  • Set a flat head screwdriver under the switch plate on the door. Pry up carefully to remove the switch from the door panel. Disconnect any wires holding the switch plate in place and set it aside.

  • Remove all the screws holding the door panel in place with a socket wrench. Loosen all the screws and set them aside for future use. Pry the door panel away from the door with a pry bar. Move the pry bar along the underside of the door panel and carefully pull up to loosen the panel. Pull up on the panel to remove it from the door.

  • Loosen the nuts at the bottom of the door panel in the opening. Turn them counter-clockswise with a socket wrench and remove them from the window regulator. Lower the window until it is sitting on the bottom of the door.

  • Push up on the window switch and remove the head and regular tape out of the window slit. Pry the window slit apart by hand so the regulator tape has room to come out. Pop the pin off holding the regulator tape in place and remove the tape from the window.

  • Slide the new tape onto the track in the window slit. Push it down until the bottom of the tape touches the motor. Press the window down switch so the motor grabs the tape. Lower the tape until it is just above the opening at the bottom of the door panel.

  • Align the window with the regulator tape in the window channel and fasten the two bolts back into place that were removed earlier. Reassemble the entire door panel just like it was removed, except in the opposite direction. Check to make sure the window is moving properly.
