How to Repair an Electric Window On a Town Car

Electric car windows are found on nearly every new vehicle made today. Unfortunately, these windows do not generally last as long as the car without having to be repaired. Over time, they may begin to move up and down slowly and need to be repaired. The electric windows on a Lincoln Town Car follow the same repair procedures as any other type of car. Sometimes the repair can be as easy as replacing the control switch or a fuse, but often the only method of repairing the window is to replace the motor or regulator.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Panel removal tool
  • Window motor
  • Electrical connector
  • Window regulator
  • Masking tape
  • Locate the fuses to the left of the steering wheel under the dashboard. Pull on the compartment door. Check for blown fuses. Look for a broken metallic strip in the center. If there is a blown fuse, replace it, then test the window control switch to see if it is working properly.

  • Remove the plastic panel over the door handle with a panel removal tool. Pry off the switch panel from the center of the door, being careful not to break the panel.

  • Pull out the electrical connector located on the bottom of the switch panel to disconnect it. Remove the door panel bolts with a socket wrench. Pull up on the door panel unit by hand to remove it and remove any electrical connectors to separate the panel from the door.

  • Pull back on the plastic panel cover to access the inner workings of the door. Locate the window motor and release the safety clip to remove the electrical connector.

  • Secure the window in place so it does not come out when the regulator is removed. Tape it to the door frame with masking tape and have somebody hold it in place to be sure it does not fall.

  • Remove all mounting bolts holding the window motor in place with a socket wrench. Take off the bolts holding the window regulator in place and remove the window regulator from the door panel. Match up the old window regular to a new unit so it can be installed in its place.

  • Reinstall the new window regulator. Insert the mounting bolts into the exact same location and tighten them down firmly with a socket wrench. Attach the new window motor with the same mounting bolts that were holding the old one in place. Insert the new electrical connector into the motor and clip it into place.

  • Reattach the plastic door panel cover and all of the electrical connectors just like they were removed. Attach the door panel to the door and bolt it back into place. Connect and reattach the switch panel to the door and secure the plastic panel over the door handle.

  • Turn on the car and operate the window control switch to make sure it is working properly and the correct repairs have been made.
