The Ford Taurus is a mid-size sedan manufactured and sold by the Ford Motor Company. The vehicle first went into production in 1985 and is currently being manufactured. The Taurus features standard seat belts for the driver, driver's passenger and backseat passengers. The belt retracts from a retractor mechanism built in to the door frame. The retractor can become dirty, cause a seat belt to become tangled inside, auto lock or fail to operate due to a failed mechanism. Wipe down the seat belt retracting mechanism and belt buckle with a cloth dampened with water and a mild detergent soap. Dirt and grime can build up on the seat belt causing it to get stuck. Ensure the seat belt properly dries before using.
Place the seat belt tongue into the buckle. A click indicates the tongue is properly in place and locked.
Grab the shoulder portion of the seat belt and pull downward until the entire seat belt is pulled out from the retractor.
Release the seat belt. A clicking sound indicates the auto-locking mechanism has been disabled.
Insert a knife into the retractor mechanism found on the door frame to loosen a twisted or stuck seat belt. Move the knife along the edge of the retractor to untangle the seat belt.
Bring your car into an authorized Ford dealership for inspection. A seat belt that fails to operate needs to be diagnosed and fixed by a trained Ford professional to ensure the seat belt is properly repaired to safety standards.
