The Sunroof Won't Close on an E46

The E46 is a fourth-generation, 3-series vehicles from automaker BMW. The fourth generation was produced from 1998 to 2005. Models from this generation include the 316, 318, 320, 323, 328, 325 and 330. Some sports models of the 3 series feature an optional sunroof. The sunroof is operated by the use of a switch located inside the car. After the sunroof is opened, it may refuse to close due to an object detected in the frame, an electrical failure or a blown fuse or motor.

  • Remove all objects from inside the sunroof frame. The sunroof features a sensor that prevents the sunroof from closing if an object is detected in its path. This is to prevent damage to arms or hands that may be in the way.

  • Press and hold the "Tilt" switch located in the overhead console between the sun visors. Hold the switch for 20 seconds. This procedure resets the sunroof motor.

  • Take your vehicle to an authorized BMW technician. Your sunroof may have a blown fuse or motor. BMW technicians have the proper knowledge and parts to properly diagnose the problem and fix it.
