Toe-In Specifications on a Ford F-100

Ford has been producing its F-Series line of light-duty trucks since 1948, with the F-100 model name first appearing in 1953. Beginning in 1984, the F-150 replaced it as the base pickup. Alignment settings vary from year to year and include toe -- the degree to which the front wheels deviate in orientation from straight-ahead, when viewed from above. If the fronts of the wheels are closer together than the rear, "toe in" is the term used to describe the condition; if they are farther apart, "toe out" is used. Toe is measured in inches at the front of the tire.

Early Models

  • For 1963, the F-100 should have a toe in of 1/16 to 3/16 inch. For 1964 through 1966, toe in should be 1/8 inch for two-wheel-drive trucks, and between 1/16 and 1/4 inch for four-wheel-drive trucks.

Models from 1967 to 1972

  • Trucks produced between 1967 and 1970 should have a toe in of 1/8 inch. Sources differ slightly on the correct setting for 1971 and 1972 trucks. According to Mitchell Manuals, toe in should be set to 1/8 inch. But according to the Chilton Book Company, 1/8 inch is correct for four-wheel-drive trucks, but two-wheel-drive trucks should be set to 3/32 inch.

Models from 1973 to 1979

  • For 1973 through 1976 trucks, toe in should be set to 1/8 inch for two-wheel-drive. For four-wheel-drive, Chilton recommends 5/32 inch, while Mitchell says 1/16 to 1/4 inch is best except for 1976, when the range is between 1/16 and 5/16 inch. For 1977 and 1978, Chilton continues to recommend 1/8 inch for two-wheel-drive and 5/32 inch for four-wheel-drive. However, Mitchell recommends a range between toe out of 1/32 inch and toe in of 7/32 inch for two-wheel-drive; for four-wheel-drive, it recommends a toe in of 1/16 to 5/16 inch. For 1979, both sources recommend a toe in of 3/32 inch.

Models from 1980 to 1983

  • Trucks produced in 1980 have a preferred toe in of 3/32 inch. Acceptable settings range from toe out of 1/32 inch to toe in of 7/32 inch. For 1981 through 1983, the preferred setting is a toe in of 1/32 inch, with an acceptable range of 3/32 inch out to 5/32 inch in.
