How to Replace FJ Cruiser Mirror Lights

The Toyota FJ Cruiser comes with optional mirror lights. These lights are mounted on the front edge of the side-view mirrors. If you notice either mirror light is not working, you can purchase a suitable replacement bulb and change them yourself, rather than pay the dealer or a mechanic to do so. Don't use a bulb stronger than 5 watts to prevent causing problems with the electrical wiring system.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat head screwdriver
  • 5 watt wedge bulb
  • Shut off the FJ Cruiser's engine. Approach the mirror containing the light you want to replace. Grasp the mirror and push it rearward to fold it in. This will give you access to the inboard edge of the mirror. Examine the inboard edge. You'll see two small tabs.

  • Depress each tab with the tip of a flat head screwdriver while simultaneously pulling the plastic cover away from the mirror. The plastic mirror cover will come off. You'll be able to see the back of the mirror glass and the plastic pod containing the mirror light bulb.

  • Unplug the wiring harness from the mirror light bulb pod. Remove the two Phillips screws from the edge of the pod. Grasp the pod and pull it out. Turn it over to view the bulb.

  • Grasp the bulb and gently pull it out. Insert the new bulb in its place. Push it down gently to ensure it's seated. Set the mirror light pod back in its mount. Insert and tighten the two Phillips screws.

  • Plug the mirror pod's harness back into the connection. Attach the mirror light cover back onto the assembly. Ensure the side with the clips on it is aligned with the inboard side of the assembly. Push the cover on firmly. The tabs will snap into place. It's not necessary to use the screwdriver when replacing the cover.
