How to Replace a Power Window Regulator

The power window regulator in your vehicle mounts inside the door panel with bolts and has the responsibility of guiding the window up and down with cables. The window motor powers the regulator; occasionally, the cables can break or become bound up and keep the window from operating properly. Replacing the power window regulator is a fairly easy job you can complete in about an hour or two.

Things You'll Need

  • Open-end wrench
  • Small slotted screwdriver
  • Nut driver
  • Masking tape
  • Socket wrench set
  • Unfasten the negative battery cable of the vehicle with an open-end wrench to prevent electric shock, then remove the plastic access panels on the interior door panel by prying them off with a small slotted screwdriver. Pry the electric window switch plate from the door panel with the screwdriver.

  • Unplug the electrical connector on the back of the electric window switch, and set the window switch plate out of the way. Unfasten the bolts securing the interior door panel to the door frame with a nut driver.

  • Find all the screws connecting the door panel to the door frame, and remove them with a screwdriver. Lift the door panel off the door frame, and disconnect any electrical wiring connectors on the back of the door panel.

  • Set the door panel out of the way, and pull the plastic liner back to locate the power window regulator. Slide the glass window up by hand, and place masking tape around the top of the window frame as well as on both sides of the glass to hold it in place while you replace the regulator.

  • Unplug the electrical connector on the power window motor, and unfasten the bolts that secure the power window regulator and motor to the door frame using a socket wrench. Detach the motor from the power window regulator, and remove the regulator from the vehicle.

  • Connect the new power window regulator to the motor, and attach the assembly to the door frame with bolts. Attach the plastic liner back over the door frame with masking tape, and plug the electrical wiring connectors to the back of the door panel.

  • Place the door panel onto the door frame and secure the panel with the bolts and screws. Attach the electrical connector to the back of the electric window switch and snap the switch back in place on the door panel.

  • Fasten the plastic access panels to the door panel by hand, and connect the vehicle's negative battery cable to the battery post.
