Installing a power antenna mast on a Pontiac Firebird is a job that can be done in about an hour or two. The antenna mast is located on the passenger-side rear fender with the motor assembly for the antenna mounted to the vehicle frame inside the trunk. Installing a new antenna can be completed without the need to remove the motor assembly, saving you time and money.
Loosen the mast nut at the base of the Firebird antenna mast with a pair of needle-nose pliers and remove the nut from the mast. Turn on the stereo and pull the mast and cable out of the antenna motor assembly.
Verify that the old antenna cable is the same length as the new antenna cable that you are installing by comparing the two cables side by side. If they are the same length, go to Step 5.
Locate the antenna mast motor housing on the interior passenger side of the trunk and unfasten the bolts that secure the motor to the vehicle frame with a socket wrench. Take the screws of the cover plate off the motor housing with a screwdriver and remove any pieces of the antenna cable from the motor gears.
Reattach the cover plate to the motor housing with screws and fasten the motor housing to the vehicle frame with the bolts. Verify that the top of the motor housing is lined up with the antenna opening in the vehicle fender.
Turn on the stereo on and slide the antenna cable through the top of the motor assembly above the vehicle fender until you feel the cable touch the top of the gears in the motor. Turn the stereo off and let the gears pull the cable into the motor housing until it stops.
Fasten the mast nut to the top of the Firebird fender with the needle-nose pliers to secure the new antenna.
