The standard air injection system (AIS) of a motor vehicle distributes air into the engine exhaust and exits the exhaust manifold. The introduction of oxygen into the exhaust prolongs fuel burning as it travels through the exhaust system. An air smog pump supplies pressurized oxygen into the exhaust stream through the exhaust manifold and catalytic converter. The air smog pump consists of an air pump, diverter valve and air distribution manifold, which contribute to the engine's overall performance.
Remove the injection tube block-off plugs with an adjustable wrench. Replace new injection tubes into the injection manifold. Tap them lightly until evenly flushed inside the injection manifold. Wrap Teflon tape around the bolt heads to prevent scratching while installing the injection tubes.
Apply copper sealant to the check valve threads. Hand-tighten on to the manifold tube. Torque with a flare wrench crescent until completely tightened.
Apply a thin layer of copper sealant to the manifold tube threads. Thread the manifold tube onto the injector manifold, making sure not to scratch the surrounding components. Pull the passenger side dipstick tube out slowly, then position the manifold tube in place. Wrap an unsoiled rag around the cylinder heads and valve covers. Tighten the manifold tube with a flare wrench until fully secured.
Position the diverter outlet on to the smog pump unit. Insert the SB marked bolts through the guide posts. Install the new gasket into its housing. Torque to 10 foot-pounds.
Place the pump bracket on to the pump unit. Insert the TR bolt and spacer to hold the bracket in its place. Do not tighten.
Position the pump assembly on to the engine. Insert and tighten two TR marked bolts with a flare wrench. Place the black adjusting bracket on to the engine. Loosen the bolt and align the adjusting bracket's bottom underneath the existing bracket. Thread the bolt through both brackets and torque until it snugly holds.
Mount the pump pulley by sliding three TR bolts through the bracket's guide posts. Torque to 10 foot-pounds.
Measure the existing hoses. Use a hose cutter to create a 10-inch passenger side diverter hose. Customize the driver side diverter hose to 21 inches. Attach hose clamps and place the hoses over the outlets. Align driver side check valves facing outward toward the fender. Align the passenger side check valve facing downward.
Angle the hose clamps on the diverter valve facing upward.
